Argo is a fleet of approximately 4,000 submersible floats that drift through the world's oceans and seas, collecting data on ocean currents, temperature, and salinity. These floats are typically used in oceanography and climate studies, in order to help scientists better understand the earth's oceans and their role in the planet's larger environmental systems. The Argo network was first established in the early 2000s, and has since grown to become one of the largest and most comprehensive ocean monitoring systems on the planet. Today, the Argo floats are deployed and operated by a wide range of governments, research institutions, and private organizations around the world.
